The incorporation of insulation into a rammed earth wall results in a wall system that outperforms other wall constructions.  The insulation is protected from degradation and insects in the core of the wall.  The high-mass interior of the RE wall is thermally separated from the exterior by the insulation, resulting in excellent thermal characteristics.  Thermal bridging is minimized and with proper detailing the structure will be very airtight.  There are a variety of appropriate rigid insulations that may be used depending upon the nature of the structure and the priorities of the client.  An insulated RE wall will at a minimum have twice the R-value of a typical stick frame wall.  These dwellings are inexpensive to heat in the winter and will remain cool in the summer.  We use a variety of different insulation boards; some made from recycled materials and materials that sequester carbon.
